Winter grazing on a small Florida homestead.

January is a wonderful biting insect free time of year in Florida.  But, remember as the temperature cools the grass stops growing.

Your mini moos who grazed all summer may require hay or more hay to be set out for them, this of course depends on your circumstances.

it is tempting to increase the amount of concentrated feed ration but a cows stomachs work best with  plenty of roughage.

Once the nightly temperatures drop below 72 the summer grasses in Florida stop growing. This is when many people overseed their pastures with a winter seed. Most feed stores carry winter rye it is very economical and it can be broadcasted by hand right over top of the native grasses, it grows very fast, looks amazingly green and the cows love it. This winter grass dies back as the weather warms, allowing your summer grasses to take back over.
